Fort Worth's Firefighter Movers Top 300,000 Pounds of Food Delivered to Tarrant Area Food Bank Through Move for Hunger

Oct 14, 2026

Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage, founded in Fort Worth in 2001 by off-duty firefighters Derrick Potter and Patrick Dodson, has delivered more than 300,000 pounds of food to the Tarrant Area Food Bank through Move for Hunger. That is enough for about 250,000 meals. The company, known locally as "the firefighter movers," joined the national nonprofit in November 2010 as one of its first moving-company partners.

The idea is simple. People throw out a lot of unopened food when they move. Before every move, Firefighting's Finest crews offer customers the chance to donate their unopened, non-perishable food. The crew loads it onto the truck and delivers it to the food bank at no cost to the customer.

"Firefighters see what happens when a family runs out of options," said Derrick Potter, co-founder of Firefighting's Finest Moving & Storage. "Food is one of the first things to go. If a family is already packing up their pantry, we can make sure those cans end up feeding a neighbor instead of a landfill."

The company was the first mover in Tarrant County to partner with Move for Hunger. In 2011 it was named Move for Hunger's first-ever Mover of the Year, and it has been Mover of the Month three times. It also drives one of the first moving trucks in the country wrapped in Move for Hunger's colors.

The pounds add up beyond moving day. Crews have collected food at the Thanksgiving Day Grub Run at Texas Motor Speedway, loading more than 7,300 pounds in a single morning in 2016. The company has hosted its Pull for Hunger at Rahr & Sons Brewery, where teams of 10 race to pull a 26-foot moving truck 100 feet, with entry paid in donations or canned food. Crews also pick up and deliver donations from dozens of community food drives each year.

Move for Hunger founder Adam Lowy has called Firefighting's Finest "one of the most reliable and committed members of our network."

Families moving this holiday season can ask their crew from the company's Fort Worth location to take their unopened food. There is nothing else to do, and the donation never adds to the cost of the move.

Firefighting's Finest also supports Parkland Burn Camp, Camp Janus and One Warm Coat. More about the company's community work is on its website.

How do I donate food when I move with Firefighting's Finest? Set aside unopened, non-perishable food before moving day and tell your crew. They load it and deliver it to the Tarrant Area Food Bank.

Does donating cost extra? No. The crew delivers the food free of charge, and the move price stays the same.

Where does the food go? Donations from Fort Worth moves go to the Tarrant Area Food Bank, which serves families across North Texas.
